When you begin to feel that your anxiety is no longer manageable that it disrupts your daily routine and causes a lot of distress in your life, it is time for you to perceive it as a medical problem and thus, you should seek help. Normally, the two most common treatments a doctor would recommend to you are taking anxiety medications and/or undergoing cognitive-behavioral therapy. You must know, however, that these methods are not the only treatments for anxiety disorders. There are also other treatments, which, when coupled with medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy can help in effectively countering anxiety. These treatments are practical, safe, effective, and best of all – natural.

Exercise

Exercise allows the body to excrete endorphins which help alleviate anxiety and stress. It has been found by researchers that exercise for at least 30 minutes at least 3 to 5 times a week can significantly reduce anxiousness. You do not have to engage in strenuous exercise though so long as it is regularly done.

Relaxation Techniques

Because anxiety is a thing of the mind, it can also be overcome by focusing your mind to a point of relaxation through meditative activities such as yoga, Pilates and tai chi. In these relaxation techniques, you will learn to breathe properly, rest your body, meditate and relax to a state of peace and calmness. Learning how to relax can significantly reduce your anxiousness and enable you to control the body’s response to anxiety through the so-called biofeedback.

Massage Therapy

One of the oldest ancient remedies and prevention of illnesses is massage therapy. There are a number of massage styles that you can choose from such as reflexology, Swedish and shiatsu among the many others. This form of touch therapy reduces anxiety, stress and can also improve your emotional well-being and sleep.

Aromatherapy

Another ancient form of therapy is called aromatherapy which uses essential oils from plants, herbs and flowers to stimulate the olfactory system in order to allow the release of certain chemicals in the brain that can help reduce anxiety. These oils may be infused in the air, applied topically or added to baths. The most commonly used essential oils in relieving anxiousness are lavender, jasmine, rose, sandalwood, ylang-ylang and cypress.

Acupuncture

The ancient Chinese medical practice of acupuncture may also help reduce anxiety. It works by unblocking the flow of the chi or energy flow throughout the body by putting needles in the points where the channels meet. In the treatment of anxiety, the needles are usually placed on the ears.

Herbal Medicine

There is now a comeback of alternative medicines. Among these are folk remedies such as herbs and other medicinal plants. Among the known plants and herbs which have medicinal elements in the treatment of anxiety are passionflower, valerian and kava.

Vitamins and Supplements

There is also what you call dietary supplements that can also help in reducing anxiety. Among these are GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric Acid), Calcium, Vitamin B, Magnesium and Pantothenic Acid.

You must understand though that undergoing these natural treatments does not give you the license to stop taking your medication if it has been prescribed to you. Medication must always be with the go or stop signal of the doctor. Also remember to seek the advice of your doctor before beginning any of the above treatments to prevent any complications.
